Food growing
and distribution
- The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens can give advice on
establishing food-growing initiatives and amenity gardens in urban areas.
- The National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners can give advice on
getting and managing an allotment and setting up an allotments society,
and can give contact details of local societies. Many allotments are
rented and managed by local councils, who can give advice on finding and
taking on a plot.
- The Soil Association can give advice on organic growing of food (and other
things), and runs a certification scheme for organic produce.
- The Henry Doubleday Research Association gives advice on organic growing,
and runs demonstration gardens and training.
The National Association of Farmers Markets can give details of where
markets are held, and how to establish one.
- Friends of the Earth have recently produced a series of briefings on
farmers' markets including a study of their economic viability: www.foe.co.uk/resource/briefings/farmers_markets.pdf
- The Food Standards Agency has been established to take action on issues
relating to the protection of public health in relation to food, which
includes examining methods of food production.
- Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming is an alliance of
organisations concerned to promote safe, health and environmentally
friendly sources of food.
- f3, the Foundation for Local Food Initiatives is a co-operative that promotes
the growth of healthy local food economies, mainly through policy
development, but also by providing training and local directories.
- FLAIR is the Food and Local Agriculture Information Resource. It
operates through a database for local food networks and directories and
aims to support learning and information sharing, and to develop a
national network.
